Introduction to feminism: blog tasks

Everyday Sexism

Watch the Everyday Sexism TED talk from Laura Bates (linked above) and answer the following questions:

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

She started the Everyday sexism project because she wanted people to experience seeing these things and how bad they were

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?

Post-feminism is a term used to describe a societal perception that many or all of the goals of feminism have already been achieved and in terms of the second question its ultimately subjective in my opinion as you cant generalise all western countries in issues surrounding the societal treatment of women as each and every one has their own personal issues concerning the concept, so my answer is that i'm unsure as so are you, unless you can tell me the treatment of women specific to every country deemed to be in the west then  its hard to answer that question.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?

50,000 women all over the world added their stories in 18 months of all ages, races, religions, disabilities and more without tech she would never have been able to reach such a wide audience in that amount of time (18 months)

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?

In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need the Everyday Sexism project because sexism would be gone and everyone would show respect. But since we’re still dealing with a lot of gender discrimination, it seems like we have a long way to go.

I think feminism will keep evolving, focusing more on intersectionality and recognizing that different women face various challenges. I hope more people join the fight against discrimination to create real change. So, while the Everyday Sexism project might not always be needed, the push for equality will remain important as society progresses.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
networked feminism also known as the fourth wave was created to tackle previous waves through use of the internet but its a problem because in introducing a fourth wave issues from the previous waves may not have been fully resolved

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
yes we are as you see a lot of movements promoted on social media apps which is useful in spreading the idealisation and issues they are trying to portray to a wilder audience for example tiktok, twitter, intagram and youtube as the main ones.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.

Everyday Sexism:
Everyday Sexism is a project that highlights the little ways sexism shows up in women’s everyday lives. It encourages people to share their personal stories of being treated unfairly just because of their gender. The goal is to make everyone aware of these issues and start important conversations about equality.

HeForShe:
HeForShe is a movement started by UN Women that calls on guys to get involved in the fight for gender equality. It wants men to stand up against sexism and be allies for women, which is all about sharing the responsibility of creating a fairer world. The idea is that when everyone works together, we can make real change happen.

FCKH8 Campaign:
The FCKH8 campaign uses bold and cheeky slogans to grab attention and raise awareness about gender inequality. It mixes humor with serious messages to challenge stereotypes and promote feminism. Plus, they often donate profits to organizations fighting against sexism, making activism cool and accessible.

This Girl Can:
This Girl Can is all about empowering women to get active without worrying about how they look or what others think. The campaign shares real stories of everyday women enjoying sports and fitness, promoting body positivity along the way. It aims to inspire girls to break free from stereotypes and just have fun being active.

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?
they arent extensions in my opinion as it  holds more reach due to internet access
